Ballots for Belva by Sudipta Bhardan-Quallen

Belva Lockwood is finally given her place in history for the many "firsts" she accomplished. Lockwood attended law school in the late 19th century and -- although she wasn't given her law diploma until she demanded it from President Grant -- she was the first woman to practice law in federal courts and to argue a case before the Supreme Court. In 1884, Lockwood was the first woman to run for U.S. President.
